dreaming about sheep?

Considering adding sheep to your farm or acreage? Discover why Shetland sheep might be the perfect fit for you.

Exceptional Wool for Your Needs

Indulge in the luxurious wool of Shetland sheep. With fibers ranging from 18 to 30 microns, their wool is exquisitely soft, perfect for garments worn close to the skin without causing itchiness.

For knitting and crochet enthusiasts, Shetlands offer a treasure trove of natural color patterns, producing unique roving and yarns that require no dyeing to create stunning finished items. Hand-spinners love the beauty and versatility of Shetland wool, as it provides endless options in spinning truly unique yarn. Their wool is a testament to the breed’s rich heritage and enduring appeal.

Small in Stature, Mighty in Spirit

Shetland sheep may be diminutive in size, but their spirit knows no bounds. Being only 1/3 to 1/2 the size of other sheep breeds, they are ideal for hobby farms or small rural properties.

Their compact size makes them manageable for older individuals, those with mobility issues, or families with small children, offering less risk and easier handling. Shetlands are an easier starter breed for this reason and they are less intimidating that managing flocks of larger breeds.

Despite their petite stature, Shetlands possess unique personalities and strong spirits, enriching any farm experience. Plus, their smaller size means they require less forage, making them efficient grazers without compromising on character.

This little guy is one of our rams. His name is Theo and he loves people. He loves head and neck scratches and gets along well with the other rams and wethers. Despite being a producing ram, he is generally more a kin to a large dog than a sheep. Shetlands have a lot of personality and, in our biased opinion, considerably more than most commercial wool sheep like merino or sheep breeds raised for meat production.

They are Easy Keepers

Explore the ease of Shetland sheep care. Their smaller size reduces the need for high fencing, saving you time and resources. Unlike goats, they aren’t prone to constant escape attempts, ensuring peace of mind for farm owners.

As excellent mothers, Shetlands typically require minimal human intervention during lambing, reflecting their resilience and adaptability. Evolving on the rugged, cold, and wet Shetland Islands, they have retained their hardiness, making them well-suited for harsh climates, although they may struggle in warm and humid conditions.

In addition to Shetlands we also raise other sheep breed, some of which are considerably larger. The image shows them with Icelandic, Jacob and Blue-Faced Leicester sheep.  The Shetlands’ easy-going nature is evident; they don’t really care who is part of the flock.

Once endangered, Shetlands are now making a remarkable recovery, yet their status remains threatened. Their distinctive fleece, vibrant personality, enduring vitality, and manageable size make them a breed worth preserving for generations to come.
